Tech Women

Her Technology's first featured "Tech Woman" is Joan Holman, of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Joan's early interests included drawing and painting (she started selling her art work as a child), and she attended art school in Italy (lucky lady!). She majored in Psychology in college, obtaining her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in this subject. Joan had her own practice in psychotherapy and taught a course in Psychology.

Her love of the arts turned her to film producing. Joan created and produced a nationally-aired PBS program on high achievers, and she was one of the founding members of the Minneapolis Film Board.

Joan has also spent many years in marketing and communications, which is her current business, as we'll see in a moment.

But nowhere in any of Joan's early accomplishments do we see any signs of computers, programming, or related subjects, yet she was an early Internet adopter, getting her own domain in 1995. She writes,

I was, by no means, a techie. I was creative, artistic, and not a computer "geek." But I was absolutely determined to be on the Internet and use it as a tool to expand my business, my opportunities and my network. So, I taught myself how to create Web sites with straight html programming and how to use the Internet for research, shopping, communicating, business and more. I used books to study html and other technical computer information about using the Internet.

One of her web sites is AudioResearch.

Currently Joan runs a 100% online business with consulting, web design, speaking and training about using the Internet for creating successful online businesses. She says,

I love being in business for myself and using the Internet on a daily basis. Through the Internet, I feel like I am connected to the pulse of the entire planet and I can hardly wait to see what each new day will bring when I turn on my computer and check my e-mail! I also cruise Web sites searching for interesting people with whom I would like to connect.

Thank you, Joan, for letting Her Technology share your Internet story. It's great to hear about women taking on technology and using it to express themselves and their ideas. Remember if Joan (and many other women) can do it -- you can too!

You can find out more about Joan and her many endeavors on the web at holman.com.

From time to time we want to feature regular women who have taken web-related technology and used it to further their business, career, education, or special interest. Or women who have become interested in the web and have begun learning and exploring its possibilities.

If you would like to recommend someone, please contact webmaster@hertechnology.com.
