Tech Women

Her Technology's second featured "Tech Woman" is Cassie Dove, of Dove Enterprise, in Virgina.

Cassie studied communications and psychology in college, but during her career at the Coast Guard with the Search and Rescue land and sea units she became interested in working with computers. Cassie created programs to help Search and Rescue operators find lost vessels and persons faster and more efficiently. During her last year in the Coast Guard, she learned how to create dynamic web pages, and started learning other programming languages. After she retired from the Coast Guard due to an injury, she knew this would be the field she would pursue.

Her first job after the Coast Guard was working for the Virginia Department of Transportation Maintenance Division as their Lead Web Programmer. While working for the state of Virginia, Cassie thought of many other programs she wanted to write. Also, numerous businesses asked her to assist them in creating web- related programs and other standalone applications. Moreover, continuing medical problems stemming from her injury made it difficult for her to hold down a full time job while going to therapy and treatments. Consequently, Cassie formed Dove Enterprise in the spring of 1999.

Some of the initial challenges she faced starting her own business included working a full day at home and not getting distracted, finding assistance with staffing needs for larger projects, meeting payroll without borrowing any money for the business, and contracts that didn't pay on time.

A "typical" day for Cassie includes answering a lot of emails dealing with requests for proposals, contract questions, staff questions, payroll issues; going through the day’s projects with her "wonderful Vice President" in San Diego; and working on projects. Cassie works until 8-9 pm until her husband comes home and forces her off the computer. One of the things Cassie loves about her job is "Not actually knowing who is going to call. We get so many different phone calls and emails from some wonderful clients asking for proposals and contracts, it's great!"

Cassie would like to have Dove Enterprise branch out in other industries over the Internet, like more retail work, children's books created in different languages, and learning programs to help others enter the IT industry who may not have enough money to go to school. Her biggest goal would be to help others with disabilities have greater careers within the IT industry. Dove Enterprise currently has 9 people on staff and is joining forces with other companies. Cassie says, "So, life is real busy, but so very exciting!"

Meet our previous Tech Woman: Joan Holman.

From time to time we want to feature regular women who have taken web-related technology and used it to further their business, career, education, or special interest. Or women who have become interested in the web and have begun learning and exploring its possibilities.

If you would like to recommend someone, please contact webmaster@hertechnology.com.
